Bette Overholt
RN Palliative Care Coordinator

I’ve worked in the healthcare industry for over forty years, and I’ve been fortunate to have worked in many different capacities, including in a hospital, as a visiting nurse, as a manager, and now as a Palliative Care Coordinator.

Patients always come first. Listening to the client is of the highest importance. My role is to understand and assess the needs of the client, to listen to what they truly want, and to develop a care plan that meets their wishes. When it comes to providing end of life care, the clients goals mean everything. It’s part of my job to be an advocate for the client and their family.

It’s a privilege and an honour to provide support and care to clients in their homes throughout their end-of-life journey. I love knowing that I’m helping people. I think that even in the smallest of ways we can make a difficult situation a little easier for the client and their family. It may mean doing something as simple as picking up a hamburger for a client because they feel it’s the only thing they want. Sometimes it’s helping someone take a walk through their garden because they really want to see it one last time. I’ve also helped people plan their funerals by helping them organize pictures. Sometimes it’s just about holding someone’s hand.

I work with a wonderful group of care coordinators. We support each other in challenging cases, collaborate and share ideas, and develop strategies to provide the best possible care. Given the nature of our caseloads, we feel it is vital to socialize outside of work regularly, whether it’s for lunch or even a walk, it’s important to support each other.

One of the most significant changes I’ve seen in healthcare is the complexity of the client’s care needs in the home. I believe there needs to be more care available for people who are nearing the end of their life.

I love knowing that I’ve made an impact and made a difference in people’s lives. Knowing that I’m helping people through their end-of-life journey is what inspires me to come to work every day.
